Adding PowerApps connector to Excel workbook (OneDrive)

Posted on 12 October, 201912 October, 2019 by Simon Gosney

PowerApps allows the use of Excel workbooks as data sources, and they can be located on a Microsoft account’s OneDrive instance or Onedrive for Business (OfB) using an organisational (work / school) account. Different connectors are available to support these two scenarios:

  • Excel Online (Onedrive)
  • Excel Online (Business)

I wanted to connect to an Excel workbook stored in my Microsoft account (MSA) OneDrive instance, so selected Excel Online (Onedrive). However, this returned an error suggesting that only MSAs were supported for this connector:

Only MSA (personal) accounts are supported in Excel Online (OneDrive) connector. Please use Excel Online (Business) connector if you want to sign in with your work account.

There was no opportunity to provide credentials for my MSA account.

However, I then created a connection using the OneDrive connector. This promoted me for my MSA credentials and the connection was created successfully. Once the OneDrive connection was available, the Excel Online (Onedrive) connector allowed me to select my MSA account for authentication, and the Excel Online (Onedrive) connection was created successfully.

Hope this helps anyone else who’s trying to connect PowerApps to an Excel workbook in OneDrive (not for business).
